Lorna Bailey Fantasia Cottage vase, produced at Old Ellgreave Pottery in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.
A striking and highly collectable example of Bailey’s distinctive ceramic work, decorated in the colourful Fantasia Cottage design. The whimsical cottage scene features a vivid red and orange roof surrounded by soft blue, green and cream tones, all defined by the bold black outlines so characteristic of Lorna Bailey’s Art Deco-inspired style.
Standing approximately 21cm tall, the vase has a wonderfully sculptural form, with a rounded body, flared black rim and angular black foot. The combination of strong shape and colourful architectural decoration gives it real presence as a display piece.
Of particular collector interest, the underside is clearly marked “Fantasia Cottage”, carries the Old Ellgreave Pottery / Lorna Bailey Ware backstamp and is hand signed Lorna Bailey in dark cobalt blue.
The colour of Lorna Bailey signatures is of interest to collectors. Potteries Auctions' guide, based on information from Lorna Bailey herself, confirms that different signature colours were deliberately used and that blue signatures have particular relevance within her production history.
