A fabulous vintage Scheurich Keramik floor vase, model 553-38, produced in West Germany during the 1960s.
Standing approximately 38 cm tall, this substantial vase combines a classic cylindrical form with a wonderfully tactile glaze treatment.
The body is finished in a rich glossy chocolate-brown glaze, contrasted by broad bands of highly textured cream and brown volcanic glaze. The irregularity of the textured bands gives the vase an organic, almost foamy appearance and provides a striking contrast against the smooth dark glaze.
A ribbed neck and substantial rounded rim complete the design, giving the vase a strong sculptural quality characteristic of West German ceramics of the period.
The underside is impressed 553-38 W. Germany, identifying the Scheurich form and its 38 cm size. Other documented examples of this exact form confirm the Scheurich attribution.
